What it is like to see a Psychologist?

At the Psychologists Office

It might be confronting to think about sitting in a room with a stranger, sharing your thoughts and feelings. You might think that the person sitting across from you is reading your mind or interpreting your body language to form an opinion about you.  Fortunately, that is not the case! A therapeutic relationship can be seen more as a proactive conversation between two people. You are not seen as a patient, reliant on the expert therapist to save you. You are the expert of your own life. Your Psychologist’s role is to listen genuinely, seek to understand your position thoroughly, and support you in your circumstances.

Why see a professional?

Talking to people who know you well can be beneficial, but sometimes it can be really helpful to talk to someone who doesn’t have stake in the situation, who is independent, and is trained to listen impartially and provide support and practical strategies that can implemented.

How does it work?

Discover Wellbeing is a sister company to Pace National. When you arrive at the Discover Wellbeing practice you will be welcomed by our friendly business support staff; they will settle you in reception with a hot drink or water while you complete some initial paperwork, just like when you see a new Doctor or other health professional. Your Psychologist at Discover Wellbeing will come to meet you and you’ll go together to one of our private counselling spaces.

In your sessions there may be aspects that you find difficult or confronting, or even a bit awkward. Your Psychologist may challenge inconsistencies between who you are and who you want to be or sit with you during emotional discomfort. You may experience a range of emotions. Our role is to work with you unconditionally and without judgment to support who you are as a person. Everyone has their own challenges; it is not our role to criticise or discount your experiences or reactions. We believe that everyone deserves to lead a happy and satisfying life and want to help you identify ways to get to that better psychological place.

Any form of therapy or counselling can be challenging, but that’s because making a change is always harder than staying at the same spot. There is a common myth out there that only the weak seek mental health support, but we think it actually takes courage to recognise that you could use some help and to seek out support.

Reach out when you are ready, and help is just around the corner.
